Pressure Sensitive Adhesive (PSA) Solutions

Understanding surface shapes and adhesive applications for optimal performance

Why Surface Shape Matters

A secure bond is critical to ensure 100% excellent performance. The shape of the surface to be adhered to significantly impacts adhesive selection and application technique.

Important Considerations:

  • What is the substrate that the adhesive will need to bond with?
  • What is the shape of the substrate's surface: flat, curved, ribbed, full support?
  • What conditions will the adhesive need to withstand in storage, during shipping, or in use: temperature, humidity, vibration, friction, etc.
  • How will the operator handle the foam part when the adhesive is exposed?
  • Operators must always protect against contamination of the adhesive or substrate.
  • Operators must always apply significant pressure when applying the product.

Surface Shape Reference Guide

1. Flat

Standard flat surface with full adhesive contact.

2. Slight Curve

Gently curved surface requiring flexible adhesive.

3. Tight Radius

U-shaped surface with challenging adhesion points.

4. Tight Corner

90° angle requiring special application technique.

5. Rectangular with Mated Ends

Channel-like surface with interior adhesion.

6. Circular or Oval with Mated Ends

Rounded channel requiring flexible adhesive.

7. Partial Adhesive Contact on Rib or Edge

Limited contact area requiring strong adhesive.

8. Bridging a Corner

Spanning across a corner with partial contact.

PSA Recommendations for Various Substrates

Selecting the right adhesive for your application

Substrate Material Recommended PSA Type Surface Preparation Application Notes
Plastic (ABS, PC, PVC) Acrylic-based PSA Clean with isopropyl alcohol Apply firm pressure, ideal temperature: 70-100°F
Metal (Aluminum, Steel) High-performance acrylic Degrease and abrade if necessary Apply uniform pressure, allow 24-72 hours for full bond strength
Glass Clear acrylic PSA Clean with alcohol-based cleaner Apply in temperatures above 50°F, avoid moisture during application
Powder-coated surfaces Modified acrylic PSA Ensure surface is fully cured Test adhesion on sample area first
Low surface energy plastics (PP, PE) Special LSE adhesive Plasma treatment may improve adhesion Higher pressure required during application
